In international comparisons the BFI offers the steel industry world-class research and development. Its field of activities range along the entire steel production process chain – from the input materials to the end products. Core competences include measurement technology, process technology and process automation. The BFI collaborates closely with similar institutes throughout Europe.

The BFI is based in the Stahl-Zentrum in Düsseldorf and is strongly integrated in the work of the VDEh through its technical work on all aspects of the material steel.

Optimisation of steel technology

A total of 13 specialist departments divided into three areas – energy & resource technology, process technology, and measurement & automation technology – examine the issues according to their expertise. Whereby the BFI focuses on optimising quality, resource and energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness throughout the works.
