Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH (MPIE)

Logo Max Planck Institut für EisenforschungThe Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE) is a legally autonomous research institute that carries out fundamental research in the field of high-performance materials, particularly steels and related metallic alloys. The Institute has been in existence for about one hundred years – examining and further developing complex chemical-physical processes, the characterisation and simulation of materials, as well as the link between the atomic structure and material properties. The research projects are characterised by a highly interdisciplinary approach and close interaction between experiment and theory.

Driving progress forward

The Institute plays a central role in enabling progress in the fields of:

  • mobility (e.g. the development of steels and soft magnets for lightweight hybrid vehicles as well as nickel-based alloys for plane turbines)
  • energy (e.g. increasing the efficiency of thermal power conversion and storage through the development of high-temperature materials and nanostructured solar cells)
  • infrastructure (e.g. the development of steels for large-scale infrastructural projects such as wind parks and power stations)
  • safety (e.g. the development of nanostructured bainitic steels for gas pipelines)

Close links between fundamental research and applications

The MPIE is equally financed by the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science and the Steel Institute VDEh. This 50% institutional co-sponsorship by industry represents a unique example of a public-private partnership (both for the Max Planck Society and for European industry) and guarantees a close link between knowledge-oriented and pre-competitive fundamental research on the one hand and commercial relevance on the other.

The Institute, with an international team of about 270 personnel, also works cross-departmentally. Scientific and technological successes are achieved in joint projects in the most competitive of research fields.

MPIE – at the forefront of research

The Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung is world-class in multi-scale simulation, surface technology, the characterisation of complex building and structural materials from the atomic level to the macro-scale, and in the design of metallurgical alloys.
